Translation

Col. i

1       “[...] of which I speak ...

2       I divided(?) the strange and hostile regions.

3       I went away and let the paths of the mountains be opened for me, (for) the admiration(?) of our land(?).

4       [Let me sh]ow you the battle, the bread baked on coals,

5       [...] the drinking of water from water-skins.

2       Narām-Sîn continued his journey and

3       the god of the land – they were walking with him:

4       In front Ilaba, the guardian of the path,

5       behind Zababa, the sharp-horned,

6       the divine emblems of Anunnītu and Šī-labba, in pairs,

7       right and left, horn (by) horn.

1       “Your luminosity is the Fire(god), your voice is the Weathergod!

2       You are like a roaring lion, they say,

3       your mouth is a venomous snake, your nails are (those of) Anzu.

4       Irnina walks beside you.

5       You do not have a rival! Who is it, who is like you?

6       Be peaceful! May Ištar and Ilaba love you!

7       Pass me and let me speak the oath of life, and swear it to you.”

8       When(?) the messenger had repeated the report,

9       he was driven off, but until then he stood (there) and (his) word passed over (to Narām-Sîn).

10     Enlil, the raging one, ... The king was appeased.

11     The burning fire inside the warrior came to an end.

12     Narām-Sîn prepared to speak,

13     and said to his vizier:

14     “Did you hear the Apišalian’s message?

15     Has anything he delivered pleased you?”

16     He answered upon the word of Enlil, correspondingly, to him,

17     he said to Narām-Sîn, the pre-eminent one:

18     My lord, verily, you are a lion, your enemies – they are verily foxes, may they not ...

5       [...] “Approaching, Enlil came to the Apišalian”:

6       “Naram-Sin has sent you a message.

7       How will you answer the angry king?

8       You are truly my god, so answer him!

9       Give me your answer, so that I may compete with him.

10     I have given to you to rule Apišal.
