Translation

       “[Yo]u have encouraged me

       because of your hidden(?) …

       [y]ou have informed me.

       Courage, discipline, aggression, and valor

have always come together for you before.

       … for you heroism

they have produced the plenty which we enjoyed.

… lift up! proclaim! be proud!

… draw near! (and) seize (it)!”

Now, then, spoke the foremost in rank:

“Restore your jewelry to your body,

     your equipment!

Certainly, you are endowed with sense. Your attacker is the enemy of ...

     ...

Let your mouth command your heart

and your heart command your legs!

Here, then, is the clash of heroes

     Tomorrow Akkade will commence battle,

the festival of men will be held

The women feel their labor pains,

the two giving birth are bathed in blood.

Where shall the comrades observe the festival?

     The companion is seated apart,

and the man prospers who will have appeared tomorrow

     in command.”

His speech was lordly in answer to the king.

He had no opponents among the forces of the king.

     Amidst the troops

     he was not vainglorious.

“That you should tomorrow be extolled

     in the palace

–33   your vizier should receive instructions.”

Take on the weapon of the enemies, his

     shield

I have attended to you, o King, my warrior,

he shall make it known to you(?).

Col. ii

He shall erect a statue of you before

     his own statues.

     The sleeper destroyed their wakefulness,

the vigilant preserved the city for the lord.

–43   He put forth his hand and purified the army.

He let loose the mighty bullocks, the warriors,

     40 thousand…

those from the city(?), thrice heroic

     those appointed,

     girded with breastplates of gold,

those from the quay of Ḫaššum,

     the ironclad,

     those who attend in reverence,

those from the mountains, with cloaks of linen(?)

     skilled of leg,

     joined together in heroism,

     who like the stars

     cover the meadows.

     Sargon journeyed

     to the land of Utanapashtim,

as if an opponent, the forest opposed him.

     It imposed darkness

on the light of the heavens.

     The sun grew dark,

     the stars came out

     against the enemy.

The fortresses of the enemy were set nine times.

     City, herds, cattle and sheep,

     he bound together.

At that time he … Simurr[um]

The tribute of Akkade, which was with him,

and the tribute of Akkade, which was split off, he led away

the city he turned to heaps and ruins.

50 leagues around the palace he uprooted.

… which he did not burn

     he …

Col. iii

50 cities did the battles …

     …

   Sargon instructs the main force:

“Now let the king who would become my equal

–3   travel himself where I travel.”
