1   When heaven had been separated from earth (and) both had been founded firmly,

2   lived already the gods and goddesses.

3   When earth, in order to be set up, had been erected,

4   when the designs of heaven and earth had been made firm,

5   when, in order to properly place canals and ditches,

6   they had set up the banks of Tigris and Euphates,

7   (then) An, Enlil, Utu and Enki,

8   the great gods

9   (and) the Anuna, the great gods,

10 sat down themselves on the lofty (B: holy) dais ...

11 They repeated among themselves:

12 “After the plans of heaven and earth have been made firm,

13 the canals and ditches have been placed in order (Akk. [they have placed in order] canals and ditches),

14 the banks of Tigris and Euphrates

15 have been placed (Akk. they have placed),

16 what will you (Akk. we) change (Akk. do),

17 what shall you (Akk. we ) fashion?

18 Anuna, great gods,

19 what will you (Akk. we) change (Sum. do),

20 what will you (Akk. we) fashion (B will we name)?”

21 The great gods, who stood (there) (B The great gods stood there),

22 (and) the Anuna gods who decree the destiny,

23 both (groups) of them answered Enlil:

24 “In Uzumua, the bond of heaven and earth,

25 you shall (Akk. let us) slaughter the Alla deities,

26 in order to let mankind (C the first one) grow from their blood (Akk. let us create mankind      from their blood).

27 The task of the gods shall be their task,

28 that forever

29 the boundary (C ditch and canal) is established,

30 that pick and carrying basket

31 are put in their hands,

32 that the house of the great gods,

33 which is suitable for a lofty dais,

34 is ma[rked out] field by field,

35 that forever

36 the boundary is es[tablished],

37 that the ditch is kept in [order],

38 the boundary is esta[blished],

39 that various plants ...

40 may grow luxuriantly,

9 that cold water is libated

11–12 You shall always call their names Ulegara and Anegara (Sum.: when(?) you have called ...).

13 That oxen, sheep, cattle, fish and birds,

14 the abundance of the land, are provided lavishly in the land

15–16 they treated the gods En-ul and Nin-ul with honor by their pure utterance.

17 Aruru (akk. Bēlet-ilī), who is worthy to be mistress,

18 by herself (Akk.: they by themselves) conceived the designs.

19–20 To make master after master, fool after fool, spring out (lit. make green, Akk. make beautiful) of the earth like grain by themselves,

21 is something which can not be changed, is (like) the eternal star(s) of heaven.

22–23 That they perfectly perform the festivals of the gods day and night, (B After they had decided the fate and had performed everything pure)
